On the Road to
Emmaus

They
got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and
those with them, assembled together and saying, "It is true! The Lord
has risen and has appeared to Simon." Then the two told what had
happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the
bread. (Luke
24:33~35)

Jesus
had died on the cross and had rose from the dead after three days as Jesus
had promised.
Women
who had been at Jesus' tomb brought the news to the people waiting for Jesus'
resurrection. But many people who had followed Jesus doubted and left to
their own ways.

"Let's
go to Emmaus." "I agree. Poor Jesus!"
Cleopas
and his friend decided to leave Jerusalem to head towards Emmaus.

"It
is so sad that Jesus died on the cross."
"I
thought that Jesus would turn the whole world into a new country."
While
the two men were walking along and talking with each other, a man appeared
and said to them. "Can I join you?"
6
The man was Jesus;
however, they did not recognize him.
"Sure,
you can. Okay, let' s go together."
7
Jesus
asked them, "What are you discussing together as you walk along?"
They
began to talk about what they knew.
8
"About
Jesus of Nazareth. He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and
all the people. "However, the chief priests and our rulers handed him
over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him."

"We
had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it
is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women
amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn't find his body.
They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was
alive."
10
"Then
some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had
said, but him they did not see." "All of this is hard to
understand."
11
Jesus
said to them, "How foolish you are. Remember what the prophets have
spoken! Did
not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?"
And
beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said
in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
12
Jesus
said that He is the Messiah who God had sent. When they heard these words,
they felt their hearts burning within them and realized something amazing.
13
They
arrived at the village to which they were going.
"It
is almost evening. Why don't you stay with us."
They
wanted to listen to Jesus' words more.
14
When
he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began
to give it to them. This was the same way that Jesus had done before.
15
Then
their eyes were opened. They recognized him. But he disappeared from their sight.
They
asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked
with us on the road?" "Yes, I felt it, too."
16
They
got up and returned at once to Jerusalem.
They
said to the disciples, "The Lord has risen." After
meeting Jesus, they believed the resurrection of Jesus and their faith was
restored.
17
Jesus
who died on the cross and had risen from the dead appeared to the two
disciples who were walking to Emmaus. They had not believed the news of the
resurrection but became believers after meeting Jesus. We should not doubt
the resurrection of Jesus and become believers of His resurrection.
